Quick Answer

Step deck trailer used for tall freight
Step deck trailer used for tall freight

Both are open-deck options, but a step deck has a lower main deck that can provide more vertical clearance for taller freight. The exact load dimensions determine the right trailer.

Flatbed

Simple open deck with side and top loading access for many standard-height loads.

Step deck

Lower main deck can help accommodate taller freight while retaining open-deck loading access.

Specialized

Loads beyond standard equipment limits may need stretch, double-drop, RGN or permitted over-dimensional service.

When a standard flatbed works well

Flatbed trucking is useful for freight that needs side loading, crane loading or an open deck. Construction materials, machinery, fabricated products, pipe, equipment and crated freight are common examples.

A flatbed is often the simpler option when the load fits the deck and height profile safely. If the freight is tall, however, the higher deck can reduce the amount of vertical clearance available before the shipment becomes over-dimensional.

Why step decks help with taller freight

A step deck—also called a drop deck—has an upper deck near the tractor and a lower main deck behind it. That lower main deck can give taller cargo more room while keeping the load on an open trailer.

That does not mean every tall load automatically fits a step deck. Length, width, weight distribution, securement points and exact height still matter. Very tall, heavy or self-propelled equipment may need a double drop, RGN or other specialized trailer.

What to send before choosing the trailer

Provide the exact shipping dimensions—not just the machine model. Attachments, buckets, guards, pallets, crates and shipping frames can change the height or length. Also send the weight and how the item will load: forklift, crane, drive-on or another method.

If the freight may be over-dimensional, identify that early. Permit rules and route restrictions vary, and the equipment choice may need to be coordinated with the route rather than selected only by deck space.

What to Send Jason

If you want help matching the shipment to the right equipment or service, send these details with your freight quote request:

  • Exact length, width and height
  • Total weight
  • Loading and unloading method
  • Can attachments be removed?
  • Tarp required?
  • Securement/lifting points if relevant
  • Pickup and delivery ZIP codes
  • Photos from multiple angles

Do not guess the equipment if you are unsure

You do not need to know the trucking terminology before asking for a quote. Send the freight details and the options can be compared. That is usually safer than booking a truck by name and discovering at pickup that the load does not fit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the main difference between a flatbed and step deck?

A standard flatbed has a level deck, while a step deck has a lower main deck behind a shorter upper deck, providing more vertical clearance for taller freight.

Is a step deck always more expensive than a flatbed?

Not necessarily. Pricing depends on the lane, capacity, freight, timing and equipment. The best comparison is based on the actual load.

Can a step deck carry oversized freight?

It can carry some over-dimensional freight, but permits or more specialized equipment may still be required depending on the load and route.

What if I do not know my machinery height?

Measure the machine in its shipping configuration, including attachments or packaging. Photos and model information can help, but exact measured dimensions are still important.
