Liftgate Service Guide

Quick Answer

Liftgate service uses a powered platform on the rear of a truck to raise or lower freight between the cargo floor and ground level. It is commonly requested when the pickup or delivery location has no loading dock or forklift. You may need a liftgate for palletized freight at offices, retail sites, residences and some jobsites, but the pallet must fit the platform and stay within its weight rating.

No dock

A liftgate can bridge the height difference when a truck cannot back to a dock.

No forklift

The platform can lower a suitable pallet to the ground, usually with a pallet jack for final positioning.

Not unlimited

Oversized, extra-heavy or unstable freight may require a forklift, crane or different truck instead.

When to request a liftgate

Request liftgate service when the location cannot safely load or unload at truck-floor height and has no suitable forklift or other equipment. This is common for small businesses, construction offices, schools, residences and temporary project sites.

Tell the carrier at the quoting stage rather than after the truck arrives. Liftgate service can change carrier selection, truck type and pricing.

Why pallet size and weight matter

A liftgate is not an elevator for unlimited freight. The platform has finite dimensions, and the rated capacity must exceed the weight being lifted. Long skids, machinery or dense pallets can be too large or heavy even when the truck itself can carry them.

The pallet also needs to move between the liftgate and the final placement area. A normal pallet jack needs a hard, level surface and may not function on gravel, grass or steep slopes.

Alternatives when a liftgate will not work

A forklift at the site may be the simplest solution for heavy pallets. Open-deck freight can often be loaded by crane or forklift. Drivable equipment may use ramps or an RGN.

If the freight is small enough, hand unloading or cargo-van service may also work, but those methods should be agreed upon before pickup.

What to Send Jason for This Shipment

You do not need to know the exact truck or trailer before requesting a quote. Send the shipment facts so the equipment can be matched to the freight:

  • Individual pallet dimensions and weight
  • Pickup/delivery dock availability
  • Forklift availability
  • Ground surface
  • Required final placement
  • Whether a pallet jack can be used
  • Any limited-access or appointment requirements

Planning Tip

If you are unsure whether you need a liftgate, describe how the freight will get from the truck floor to the ground. That answer usually makes the decision clear.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is liftgate service the same as inside delivery?

No. Liftgate service moves freight between truck height and ground level. Inside delivery is a separate service with its own limitations.

Do all LTL trucks have liftgates?

No. Liftgate service must generally be requested so suitable equipment can be assigned.

Can a liftgate lower a 3,000-pound pallet?

It depends on the specific liftgate rating and platform. Heavy pallets need vehicle-specific confirmation.

Do I need a liftgate if I have a forklift?

Usually not if the forklift can safely access and handle the freight, but site and truck compatibility still need to be confirmed.
